ABOUT THE NEW ERASMUS+ PROGRAMME

The new European Erasmus+ Programme draws on more than 25 years' experience of European programmes in the fields of education, training and youth.

Erasmus+ 2014/2020 results from the integration of the following programmes implemented by the European Commission during the period 2007-2013: the Lifelong Learning Programme; Youth in Action; Erasmus Mundus; Tempus; Alfa; Edulink, and; programmes of cooperation with industrialized countries in the higher education sector.

Erasmus+ aims to improve upon these programmes, promoting synergies and integration throughout the different education, training and youth sectors, removing artificial barriers between the various Actions and project formats, developing new ideas, attracting new players from the world of work and civil society, and stimulating new forms of cooperation.

Erasmus+ aims to become a more effective instrument for addressing real needs in terms of the development of human and social capital in Europe and elsewhere.

Erasmus+ is being launched at a time when almost six million young people in the EU are unemployed, with levels of youth unemployment exceeding 50% in some countries. At the same time, there are over two million job vacancies, and a third of employers report difficulty in recruiting staff with the required qualifications. This demonstrates the existence of significant skills deficits in Europe.

Erasmus+ will address these deficits by providing opportunities for study, training, work experience or volunteering abroad.

In 2014, the EU is making funding of €1.8 billion available for the Erasmus+ Programme. The total budget for the 2014-2020 period amounts to €14.7 billion.
